VANDANA JOURNAL / THE ART OF HANDWEAVING

Not just a saree.
A story woven by hand.

Discover what handloom means, how it differs from powerloom weaving, and what to ask before choosing your next saree.

01 / UNDERSTAND THE WEAVE

What is a handloom saree?

A handloom saree is woven on a loom operated by a person, without a motor powering the weaving motions. The weaver coordinates the opening of the threads, the passage of the shuttle and the beating of the cloth.
The skill lies in controlling the yarn, tension, rhythm and pattern. Handloom can use cotton, silk, blends or other fibres: “handloom” tells you how the fabric is woven, not what it is made from.

Two directions. One fabric.

Warp — the threads that run along the length of the cloth.
Weft — the yarn passed across the warp to build the fabric.

02 / SIDE BY SIDE

Handloom vs powerloom.
Know the real difference.

Both methods can produce beautiful sarees. The defining difference is what powers the weaving process.

Choose the craft you value, then assess the actual saree. A high price, an uneven thread or a traditional design alone does not prove handloom origin.
03 / WHY IT MATTERS

The value is in the human touch.

Skill in every pass

Manual weaving draws on learned coordination and judgement. Buying genuine handwoven fabric creates demand for that skill.

Tradition, still evolving

Handloom connects regional knowledge with contemporary colours and designs. It is a living craft, not only an heirloom.

A fabric with character

The yarn and weave shape the texture and drape. Small variations can be part of handweaving; damage and major faults still deserve attention.

05 / EXPLORE THE LOOMS

Know your loom.
Know your saree.

మగ్గం మారితే… చీర తయారీ విధానం మారుతుంది!

Hand-operated

The weaver supplies the weaving power.
Pit loom · గుంత మగ్గం

A loom arranged over a pit, with the weaver operating treadles below ground level. This structure is important in traditional Mangalagiri weaving.

Frame loom · ఫ్రేమ్ మగ్గం

A raised wooden or metal frame holds the warp. A handloom version is operated manually.

Throw-shuttle handloom

The weaver passes the shuttle carrying weft from one side to the other by hand.

Fly-shuttle handloom

A cord and picking mechanism propel the shuttle. The weaver supplies the power, so a fly-shuttle mechanism does not make the loom a powerloom.

Jacquard handloom

A hand-operated loom fitted with a mechanism that selects warp threads for intricate patterns, often using punched cards.

Dobby handloom

A manually powered loom with a mechanism that controls groups of warp threads for repeating patterns or borders.

Motor-powered

Powered mechanisms carry out the weaving motions.
Shuttle powerloom

A motor drives the weaving motions, including insertion of weft using a shuttle.

Rapier loom

A carrier or pair of carriers transfers the weft through the opening in the warp.

Air-jet loom

Compressed air carries the weft across the warp opening.

Water-jet loom

A jet of water inserts the weft. This method is suited to certain synthetic filament yarns, rather than every saree fabric.

Projectile loom

A small gripper projectile carries the weft across the weaving width.

Electronic Jacquard powerloom

A powered loom with electronic pattern control for complex, repeatable woven designs.

Names describe different things. Pit and frame describe the structure; throw-shuttle and fly-shuttle describe weft insertion; Jacquard and dobby describe pattern control. A Jacquard design can be made on either a handloom or a powerloom.
06 / ROOTED IN MANGALAGIRI

A local tradition.
A distinctive border.

Traditional Mangalagiri cotton sarees are associated with fine cotton weaving, pit looms and extra-warp Nizam borders. The border and the body’s woven texture are part of this regional textile identity.
Contemporary collections may add print, embroidery, cutwork or other decoration. These describe the design treatment; they do not, by themselves, establish the weaving method or fibre content.
Ask about the origin, weaving method and composition of the specific saree you like. A regional name alone does not establish that every product is handwoven.

07 / BUY WITH KNOWLEDGE

Five checks before you choose.

Ask how it was woven

Ask the seller whether the particular fabric is handwoven or powerloom-woven, and what information supports that description.

Confirm the fibre

Cotton, silk and cotton–silk blends are different specifications. Confirm composition, dimensions and blouse inclusion.

Look closely

Request actual photographs and a video of the body, reverse side, border and pallu. Assess finish, yarn damage and any visible faults.

Check any certification claim

Where a Handloom Mark label is provided, verify it using the official scheme’s label or QR verification. Do not treat an unverified logo as proof.

Choose for your needs

Feel, weight, breathability, drape and durability depend on the particular fabric. Ask for the care instructions before ordering.
There is no single “touch test” or visible irregularity that proves handloom origin. Not every genuine handwoven piece carries a label; ask for clear product information and verify any certification claim.
08 / YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A little more clarity.

No. Handloom describes the weaving method. Pure silk describes fibre composition. A handloom saree may be cotton, silk, a blend or another fibre.

Handloom is valued for manual craftsmanship and heritage. Either method can produce well-made or poorly made fabric. Compare yarn, weave, finish and suitability for your needs.

Manual labour, slower production, design complexity, yarn and finishing can affect the price. Cost alone does not establish handloom origin.

Do not assume so from the style name. Confirm the weaving method and claimed origin of the individual product.

No. Some handwoven fabrics have subtle variations, while others are very uniform. Major defects should not be excused as evidence of handcraft.

Follow the care instructions for the specific fibre, dye, zari and decoration. Ask Vandana for guidance before washing a delicate or embellished saree.
